A section of the newly opened LAMECO flyover in Osogbo, Osun State, was damaged on Friday, just three weeks after it was commissioned and opened to the public.
The incident happened after heavy rainfall that lasted for nearly eight hours between Thursday and Friday in the state capital.
Governor Ademola Adeleke had officially opened the 672-metre flyover on July 1, 2026, as part of his administration's road infrastructure projects.
The damage left part of the bridge with a sunken surface and visible cracks on one lane, causing concern among motorists and residents who were forced to use other routes.
Drivers approaching the affected area slowed down while passing through the damaged section due to safety concerns.
Many commuters called on the state government to quickly repair the bridge to stop the damage from getting worse and to ensure the safety of road users.
Following the incident, authorities closed the bridge to traffic.
Personnel of the Amotekun Corps were stationed at the site to stop people and vehicles from entering the affected area.
Reacting to the development, the Osun State chapter of the Accord Party claimed that the damage was the result of deliberate vandalism.
The party accused members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) of carrying out acts aimed at damaging projects completed by the Adeleke administration ahead of the coming governorship election.
According to the party, it had received reports suggesting that some public facilities delivered by the state government were being targeted.
It claimed the alleged actions were intended to create the impression that the government had failed despite completing several infrastructure projects across the state.
The Accord Party also condemned the alleged destruction of public property, stating that government projects belong to all residents of Osun State and should not become targets of political disagreements.
