France forward Kylian Mbappé has made World Cup history by becoming the first player to win the tournament's Golden Boot on two occasions after finishing as the top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Real Madrid star scored an impressive 10 goals in eight matches, edging Argentina captain Lionel Messi to claim the prestigious award. The achievement adds to the Golden Boot Mbappé won at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he finished with eight goals.The 27-year-old also became the first player to reach double figures in goals at a single World Cup since West Germany's Gerd Müller scored 10 times at the 1970 tournament.
Mbappé's remarkable scoring record has also seen him become the leading goalscorer in the history of the men's FIFA World Cup, with 22 goals—one more than Messi.
He moved ahead of the Argentine legend after scoring twice in France's third-place play-off against England on Saturday. Despite Mbappé's brace, France suffered a 6–4 defeat, ending their campaign in fourth place.
Speaking after the match in Miami, Mbappé admitted the individual accolade was bittersweet.
"When you score that many goals in the World Cup, it certainly takes you to a whole new level," he said.
"But I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final. It's good for my legacy once I've retired, but right now, that's not what's on my mind."
While the Golden Boot further cements Mbappé's place among football's all-time greats, the French captain made it clear that team success remains his ultimate priority.
