The committee, chaired by Kazeem Oyewale, popularly known as Asiri Eniba, was inaugurated on Friday, 24 July, at the union's national headquarters in Abuja.
The development comes just days after Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered the suspension of NURTW operations in motor parks across the state, halted the collection of levies and directed security agencies to arrest anyone operating in the name of the union following violent clashes between rival factions.
Speaking during the inauguration, NURTW National President, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, represented by the union's Deputy National President, Aliyu Issa Ore, rejected the state government's decision, insisting that no state governor has the constitutional authority to suspend the activities of the union.
According to Ore, the NURTW is a national organisation that does not operate under the control of any state government. He maintained that the union had successfully challenged similar actions in court in the past.
He explained that the national leadership decided to constitute the caretaker committee after repeated efforts to engage the union's leadership in Osun failed, stressing that the union could not leave its activities in the state without recognised leadership.
Ore also said the committee's inauguration was necessary ahead of the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, noting that the union has an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that the caretaker committee would oversee the union's affairs in the state pending the resolution of all outstanding issues surrounding the Osun chapter.
