The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dismissed claims that he made comments capable of dividing Nigerians along regional lines, describing the allegations as untrue.
Obi made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme on Sunday, where he said his past actions and relationships with people across the country showed his commitment to unity.
The former Anambra State governor said the allegation that he made anti-northern remarks was false, adding that such comments did not reflect his views or history of engagement with northern communities.
He recalled his visit to Borno State during the early period of the Boko Haram insurgency when many people avoided travelling to the area. According to him, he visited the state to sympathise with former governor Ali Modu Sheriff after the killing of his brother.
Obi also mentioned his visit to Borno after major flooding in the state, where he donated ₦50 million, met with traditional and political leaders, and visited internally displaced persons’ camps.
He said his humanitarian activities had taken him to several northern states, including Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Gombe, Bauchi and Sokoto, as well as communities affected by insecurity in other parts of the country.
The NDC candidate said his personal relationships also showed that he had always worked with people from different backgrounds. He noted that his former aide-de-camp was from Kano and a Muslim.
Obi further stated that during his eight years as Anambra State governor, his domestic staff included northerners, while his administration supported Muslim residents of the state to undertake the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
He added that he currently supports Almajiri schools in Kano and Bauchi, alongside a School of Nursing in Bauchi, as part of his efforts to promote education and humanitarian support across Nigeria.
Obi maintained that his record of service across different regions proves that he supports inclusion and national cooperation rather than division.
