Ooni's Palace Denies Conferring Chieftaincy Title On Baba Ijesha.

The palace of the Ooni of Ife has denied claims by Nollywood actor James Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, that he was conferred with a chieftaincy title during a recent visit to the monarch.

The actor had earlier announced that he and his wife, Luminee, were received by the Ooni of Ife, who welcomed them warmly, presented them with gifts, including a new car, and allegedly bestowed on him the title of "Baba Awada Konge Oduwa, Ile Ife, Ile Oodua."

However, the Ooni's spokesperson, Moses Olafare, told The PUNCH that while he was aware the monarch gave Baba Ijesha a vehicle, he had no knowledge of any chieftaincy title being conferred.

According to Olafare, the Ooni is known for gifting vehicles to individuals from different walks of life, describing the gesture as a longstanding tradition.

"Kabiyesi gives cars to people. This is not the first time. He has given cars to many people, including kings and other individuals, and this is not new," he said.

He added that several people, including himself and notable figures such as Haruna Ishola and Sefiu Alao, had previously received vehicles from the monarch.

A separate palace source also dismissed the actor's claim, insisting that recognised chieftaincy titles are not awarded in the manner described.

The conflicting accounts have generated widespread reactions on social media, with users expressing differing opinions over the development. While some suggested the palace was attempting to distance itself from the controversy, others questioned the authenticity of Baba Ijesha's announcement.

The actor recently spoke about embracing a new chapter in his life, saying a visit to the Ooni with his family marked the first time he had travelled with them. He also expressed gratitude for what he described as a second chance and pledged not to squander it.

Baba Ijesha was convicted in 2022 in connection with the sexual assault of a minor and was released from prison in November 2025 after serving more than three years in custody.
