Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has directed that civil servants who lost their jobs under previous administrations should receive all their outstanding benefits after completing a verification exercise.
He said those affected would be paid what they are owed even though many of them can no longer return to the civil service because of their age.
The governor made this known on Wednesday during a civic reception organised in his honour by Ndi Imo in Abia at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba.
The issue came up after requests were made for workers who were removed from service between 2011 and 2012 to be brought back.
Otti explained that his government had looked into the request but found that many of the affected workers had spent about 15 years or more outside the service and were no longer within the age required to resume work.
Instead of recalling them, he ordered that their full entitlements should be calculated and paid once they complete the verification process.
He advised anyone who has not yet received the payment to present themselves for verification so the government can process and release the money due to them.
The governor also thanked Ndi Imo in Abia for organising the reception, describing it as a sign of support for his administration.
Speaking on employment, Otti said his government does not consider a person's state of origin when recruiting workers.
He said appointments into sectors such as education and healthcare are based on ability and qualifications rather than where an applicant comes from.
He added that Abia and Imo people share close ties and that residents of Imo living in Abia enjoy the same rights and opportunities as indigenes of the state.
According to him, many Imo families have lived in Abia for generations, making them part of the state's community.
Otti assured Imo residents in Abia that they would continue to enjoy protection and equal treatment under his administration.
He said his government would continue to promote peaceful coexistence and unity among all residents regardless of their background.
The governor also stated that the progress made by his administration over the past three years is only the beginning, adding that more development projects will follow.
