The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to take responsibility for protecting their votes, saying the credibility of future elections depends on the determination of the people rather than the electoral body.
Obi made the remarks on Friday while speaking with journalists after attending the burial of Pa Simon Okorie Abaa, the father of NDC Ebonyi South senatorial candidate, Chief Linus Okorie, in Onicha, Ebonyi State.
He said Nigerians have the power to make their votes count if they remain united and refuse to allow the electoral process to be manipulated. According to him, the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will largely depend on the resolve shown by the electorate during the election.
Obi said citizens should reflect on the current state of the country and decide the kind of future they want for the next generation. He stated that those calling for change are making great sacrifices because Nigeria cannot continue on its present path.
The former Anambra State governor also expressed concern over the country's economic challenges, saying poverty and hunger have continued to worsen across communities. He noted that the growing hardship is visible in many villages and does not require reports from international organisations for people to understand the seriousness of the situation.
He added that millions of Nigerians are struggling with severe hunger and called for urgent action to reverse the trend, insisting that the country cannot continue to ignore the suffering of its citizens.
Speaking on claims of intimidation against opposition supporters, Obi said the biggest burden facing Nigerians today is the harsh economic condition. He argued that hunger and the rising cost of living have affected people across the country, regardless of political affiliation.
He called on Nigerians to speak out against the situation and demand better leadership, saying citizens should no longer accept the conditions they are living under.
