A 60-year-old man has died after suffering a medical emergency while in a hotel with a 20-year-old woman in Dutse, Jigawa State.
The Jigawa State Police Command said it has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's sudden death, which occurred on Tuesday, July 21.
The command's spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed the incident in a statement shared on the police command's Facebook page.
According to the statement, the deceased had checked into the hotel with the 20-year-old woman and later requested a meal.
However, shortly afterwards, he reportedly developed a medical emergency and began "gasping for air".
"Upon receiving the distress report, police officers attached to the Yalwawa Division responded swiftly to the scene and immediately evacuated him to the General Hospital, Dutse, where he was examined by medical personnel and unfortunately certified dead," the statement said.
Following the man's death, detectives from the Yalwawa Division examined the hotel room and recovered food items, drinks, a suspected sexual enhancement substance and other personal belongings as part of the ongoing investigation.
The deceased's remains were subsequently released to his family for burial at their request.
Meanwhile, the 20-year-old woman who was with the man at the time of his death is assisting the police with information as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or rumours, assuring that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly, professionally and impartially.
