She made the remarks during a visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, where she also announced a N2 billion donation towards the revitalisation of the local weaving industry.
Speaking during the visit, the First Lady said she admired the richness and cultural significance of Akwete fabrics, describing the material as soft and breathable. "If God brings my husband in a second time, I'll be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete. I am going to be wearing that because it is very soft breathable cotton," she said.
She also praised the cultural importance of traditional clothing, stressing that preserving indigenous crafts and fabrics was essential to maintaining Nigeria's cultural identity.
"I'm in awe of all the richness of what the Akwete fabrics stand for. I love traditional outfits because our tradition, our culture, tells us who we are. The moment we lose that, we won't remember where we come from," she said.
Oluremi noted that Akwete weaving had been passed down through generations and described the craft as one that requires love, patience and endurance.
"The craft was transferred from generation to generation. It is a sacred craft done with love, patience, and endurance," she added.
The First Lady further urged stakeholders to support the women involved in producing Akwete fabrics and encourage them to pass the traditional craft on to younger generations.
"The tradition of the Akwete handmade fabric is dear to the hearts of the women who make it, and they should be encouraged to pass it on to the next generation," she said.
