Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film franchise, has reportedly died at the age of 78, according to a statement released by his family on Monday.
The family said Neill died in Sydney in what they described as a "sudden and unexpected" passing. In a statement shared on the actor's social media page, they said he was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments."Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life," the statement read.
The family also noted that Neill had remained cancer-free following years of treatment for blood cancer, describing that as a source of comfort despite the unexpected loss.
Neill announced in April that he was cancer-free after undergoing treatment for blood cancer over the past five years.
Throughout a career spanning decades, Neill earned international recognition for his role as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, a character he reprised in several sequels. He also delivered acclaimed performances in films such as The Piano, where he starred alongside Holly Hunter, and Dead Calm with Nicole Kidman.
His diverse body of work included roles in Event Horizon, Omen III: The Final Conflict, and the television series The Tudors, where he portrayed Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. Neill also received Emmy nominations for his performances in the 1998 miniseries Merlin and as narrator of the 2017 documentary Wild New Zealand.
Neill rose to international prominence following his appearance in the 1979 film My Brilliant Career, directed by Gillian Armstrong. He later collaborated with acclaimed actors and filmmakers, including Meryl Streep in Plenty and A Cry in the Dark, further establishing himself as one of the most respected performers of his generation.
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand's most accomplished actors, Sam Neill leaves behind a lasting legacy through his memorable performances across film and television, particularly his beloved role in the Jurassic Park franchise.
