Senate Demands End To Boko Haram Rehabilitation.

The Senate has asked the Federal Government to stop the rehabilitation programme for repentant Boko Haram members following the growing attacks, kidnappings and killings of military personnel across the country.

Lawmakers reached the decision on Tuesday while debating the worsening security situation, which they described as a serious threat to Nigeria.

The resolution was adopted after an additional prayer moved by Senator Joseph Ikpea, who represents Edo Central, received the support of lawmakers during plenary.

The proposal came as the Senate considered a motion on the increasing attacks against serving and retired members of the armed forces.

The motion was sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, who represents Katsina Central and chairs the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army.

It was prompted by the recent abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who was kidnapped alongside his wife in Katsina State.

Abubakar later died while being held by his captors.

While presenting the motion, Yar’Adua said insecurity had reached an alarming level across the country.

He noted that terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and violent attacks had continued to spread across many states, leaving many communities in fear and destroying lives and property.

He said the killing of the retired general was not only a painful loss for his family but also showed that criminal groups had become more daring by targeting both serving and retired military officers.

According to him, such attacks weaken the confidence of citizens, affect the morale of security personnel and encourage criminals to continue their activities.
