The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has appealed to parents, guardians and community leaders across Nigeria's South East to encourage more young people to enlist in the Nigerian Army after revealing that the region has repeatedly failed to meet its recruitment quota.
Speaking during the passing-out parade of 2,989 regular recruits at the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State, Shaibu said the training depot was established to improve recruitment from the South East, but the expected number of applicants had not been achieved.
He said the recruitment slots allocated to the zone had remained underused and urged traditional rulers, community leaders, parents and guardians to motivate qualified young men and women to take advantage of the opportunity to serve the country through military service.
According to him, joining the Nigerian Army offers young people a chance to build leadership skills, serve the nation and contribute to national development.
Addressing the graduating recruits, the Army Chief said they would be entering service at a time when Nigeria continues to face security threats, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, separatist violence, organised crime and cyber-related crimes. He urged them to remain disciplined, dedicated and committed to protecting the country.
Shaibu also reminded military personnel to strictly comply with the Nigerian Army's social media policy. He warned that sharing operational details, military photographs, sensitive locations or unverified information online could attract disciplinary measures, including dismissal from service.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru also addressed the event, assuring the Nigerian Army of his administration's continued support. He pledged that the state government would maintain a peaceful atmosphere for military training and strengthen cooperation between security agencies and host communities.
