Three members of a local vigilante group were reportedly killed after suspected gunmen attacked Sabon-Layi community in Gwol District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to Vanguard, the attack occurred at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, sparking renewed concerns over the persistent security challenges facing communities in the area.
Community sources said the assailants stormed the community under the cover of darkness and targeted vigilantes who were on duty at the time of the attack.
The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident, describing the killings as a direct assault on community efforts to protect lives and property.
He said the deceased were members of a local security outfit established to defend residents against recurring attacks in Barkin Ladi and neighbouring communities.
“The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community,” Tengwong said.
He expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the local government area, noting that residents continue to live in fear despite the presence of security personnel.
Tengwong called on both the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to strengthen security in the area by deploying more security operatives to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or confirm the number of casualties.
The latest attack adds to a series of violent incidents that have affected communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where residents have repeatedly called for improved security to curb recurring attacks and restore lasting peace.
