President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian medical professionals living and working abroad to return home and contribute to the country's development.
The President made the appeal on Friday during a meeting with members of the Nigerian Diaspora Medical Associations at the State House. The delegation was led by the Director-General of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa.Addressing the group, Tinubu reflected on his own experience of studying and working in the United States before deciding to return to Nigeria, saying there was "nowhere like home".
"I've been through that journey. I'm home, and I can tell you, there's nowhere like home. I've experienced being in America and benefited from the opportunities it offered in my profession of accountancy and finance," the President said.
He recalled his early career in the United States, including his time at the Standard Oil Building in Chicago, adding that returning to Nigeria had given him the opportunity to contribute to the nation's progress.
Tinubu urged the medical professionals to encourage their colleagues overseas to consider returning, assuring them that his administration would continue to create an enabling environment for healthcare workers to practise and succeed in Nigeria.
"My friends who are still there, try to attract them home. We are committed to the Renewed Hope agenda so that Nigerians can enjoy a better environment, improved education, sustainable development and shared prosperity," he said.
The President added that his administration was laying the foundation for future generations, stressing that the contribution of skilled professionals returning to Nigeria would be invaluable.
Reaffirming his government's commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, Tinubu said tackling poverty remained a top priority.
"Poverty is not acceptable. We will not accept it. We will fight it. We will bring prosperity and provide better care for our people," he said.
