Popular Nigerian TikTok creator Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, and his associate, Bello Oladipo, have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court on charges of resisting arrest, obstructing police officers and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. The Lagos State Police Command brought the pair before the court on Monday, 6 July, following an incident that allegedly occurred on 2 July along the Coastal Road in Lekki, Lagos.
According to the police, officers stopped Peller while he was driving a vehicle without registration number plates. Although the content creator reportedly explained that the vehicle had been recently purchased, officers insisted that he accompany them to the police station.
The situation allegedly escalated after Peller began recording the encounter on his mobile phone. He later claimed that officers became aggressive during the interaction, alleging that one officer grabbed his shirt and pointed a firearm at him. The police have disputed those allegations.
The prosecution filed a three-count charge against Hamzat and Oladipo, accusing them of conspiracy to resist public officers, obstructing police officers while carrying out their lawful duties, and behaving in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by threatening and filming officers during the operation.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The court granted each defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a blood relative. The court also directed them to provide evidence of two years' tax clearance.
The case has been adjourned until 11 August for further proceedings.
