President Bola Tinubu has urged African leaders to take a united stand against the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, saying violence against fellow Africans should never be accepted.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tinubu said African nations must speak with one voice to reject intolerance and attacks on people from other countries on the continent.
The President said Nigeria strongly condemned the attacks on its citizens and other Africans living in South Africa.
He disclosed that the Nigerian government had already evacuated more than 1,490 citizens in seven separate batches and remained ready to take further steps if needed.
Tinubu also supported Ghana's proposal for ECOWAS to jointly condemn the violence and raise the matter at the next African Union summit.
According to him, a united position from African leaders would send a clear message that such actions have no place on the continent.
He said South Africa should remember the support it received from African countries during its struggle for freedom, noting that nations including Nigeria made sacrifices that contributed to the country's liberation.
Beyond the issue of xenophobic attacks, Tinubu restated Nigeria's commitment to the newly adopted ECOWAS Compact for the Future of Regional Integration.
He described the agreement as a guide for strengthening cooperation among member states, rebuilding trust, promoting peace, improving economic ties, and supporting democratic governance across West Africa.
The President also said Nigeria would continue to support constitutional rule, respect for human rights, and the rule of law while maintaining its opposition to unconstitutional changes of government.
He added that Nigeria would continue backing plans for an ECOWAS Counter Terrorism Force, stronger intelligence sharing, joint security operations, the removal of trade barriers, better cross-border infrastructure, and digital development aimed at boosting regional growth and cooperation.
