US President Donald Trump has said he is considering launching a major military assault on Iran, warning that any potential attack could be larger than previous US strikes against the country.
Trump made the disclosure in an interview with Axios as the US military carried out its 12th consecutive day of strikes against Tehran on Wednesday.
"I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before. I am close to making a decision. We are all set for it," Trump said.
The US president added that Israel would join the operation if requested, but insisted that Washington did not need Israeli support to carry out the strikes under consideration.
Trump also dismissed ongoing efforts to revive negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, claiming that the Iranian leadership had not yet suffered enough pressure to agree to a deal.
"They haven't received enough pain yet," he said, while acknowledging that Iranian officials "want to negotiate" but were not yet ready to reach a final agreement.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the Trump administration's approach to Tehran as "a head for an eye".
Rubio made the comment while speaking to reporters at the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Manila, Philippines, in response to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's warning that Tehran's strategy towards the US was based on an "eye for an eye" principle.
"The president's policy is a head for an eye. I mean honestly, that's what it's going to be. I mean, [Iran] will pay a very heavy price for the things they're doing," Rubio said.
According to US Central Command, the US military completed its 12th consecutive day of strikes against Tehran on Wednesday evening.
The escalation comes amid claims by both sides that the other has violated a ceasefire agreement reached under a memorandum of understanding last month.
