US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Tehran, promising a forceful response following what he described as an attempted Iranian attack on US forces in the Middle East.Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Iran was “going to get a beating”, adding: “We are going to beat the f**king sh*t out of them.”
His remarks came just hours after the United States and Saudi Arabia launched coordinated strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq. The operation was carried out in response to a series of attacks targeting US military personnel and Saudi oil facilities, further undermining already fragile diplomatic efforts in the region.
Trump said the operation had been coordinated with Iraqi officials before the strikes were carried out against Iran-aligned militia positions. However, the escalation prompted Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to postpone a planned visit to Riyadh, citing “today’s events”.
The joint US-Saudi operation drew swift criticism from across Iraq's political spectrum. Former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani described the strikes as a “dangerous overstep of the principle of Islamic brotherhood”, warning they risked fuelling further instability.
The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), the umbrella organisation representing the Iran-aligned militias targeted in the strikes, also condemned the attacks, warning they marked a “highly dangerous escalation”.
According to the PMF, at least 20 people were killed and a further 32 injured in the strikes. Meanwhile, US Central Command said it had targeted “multiple terrorist logistics and weapons sites across eastern Iraq”, describing the operation as a response to recent attacks by Iran-backed armed groups on US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Separately, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran had not sought negotiations with Washington over the past two weeks, rejecting claims that Iran was eager to resume talks with the United States.
Elsewhere, Jordan's military said its air defence systems intercepted five missiles launched by Iran early on Wednesday. The interceptions came hours after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced strikes against US military targets in the Arab nation, adding another layer of tension to an increasingly volatile regional conflict.
