The United Kingdom has released an updated list of items that travellers are not allowed to bring into the country in 2026, warning that customs officials will seize prohibited goods at border entry points.
The government also said anyone caught importing restricted items without the required permits could face legal action.
The updated guidance, published on July 23 as part of the UK's border and customs regulations, explains which goods are completely banned and which require special licences before they can be brought into the country.
According to the guidance, the restrictions are aimed at protecting public safety, public health, the environment and wildlife. Items that are completely banned include controlled drugs, offensive weapons such as flick knives, self-defence sprays like pepper spray and CS gas, endangered animal and plant species, rough diamonds, and indecent or obscene materials, including certain books, magazines, films and DVDs.
The UK also maintains a ban on personal imports of meat and dairy products from most countries outside the European Union as part of measures to prevent the spread of animal diseases.
The government said some goods can only be imported after travellers obtain the required licences or permits. These include firearms, explosives and ammunition, which remain under strict import controls.
Food and plant products are also subject to checks. Authorities said such items may be refused entry if they contain pests or diseases, are meant for commercial use instead of personal consumption, or were not grown within the European Union.
The guidance also warned travellers against bringing counterfeit or pirated goods into the UK.
Customs officials can seize products that violate intellectual property rights, including illegal copies of films, music and other copyrighted materials, as well as fake branded products.
UK authorities advised travellers to check the country's customs rules before travelling to avoid delays, confiscation of goods or possible prosecution upon arrival.
