A United Nations investigation has accused Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out a campaign of mass killings, sexual violence, abductions, and forced starvation in the North Darfur city of al-Fashir, describing the actions as part of an intentional policy that may amount to genocide.
The findings come as Sudan’s civil war continues to devastate communities across the country, with the RSF and the Sudanese army engaged in a prolonged conflict. According to the UN probe, the abuses occurred after the RSF imposed a lengthy siege on al-Fashir before capturing the city last year.Survivors Report Widespread Sexual Violence and Killings
The investigation documented accounts of civilians who said they experienced extreme violence during and after the siege. Survivors described being subjected to gang rape in locations where the bodies of recently killed civilians, including relatives, were still present.
The report said RSF forces and allied groups carried out widespread attacks against civilians, including mass killings and abductions of women and girls. Investigators said the scale and pattern of abuses pointed to a coordinated campaign rather than isolated incidents.
The RSF has repeatedly denied allegations of atrocities during the civil war, saying accusations against its forces are fabricated by opposing groups.
Starvation Used as a Weapon of War, UN Says
The UN investigation also accused the RSF of using starvation as a method of warfare by maintaining a prolonged siege, restricting humanitarian assistance, and attacking food production systems.
The report said the deliberate obstruction of aid and damage to essential civilian infrastructure contributed to severe suffering among residents trapped in the city.
The UN’s findings build on previous conclusions that the violence against non-Arab communities during the RSF takeover of al-Fashir showed characteristics consistent with genocide.
UN Warns of Possible Repeat in al-Obeid
The UN human rights chief has warned that a similar crisis could be developing around al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, where the RSF has been gathering forces.
The city is home to roughly half a million people, including more than 83,000 internally displaced people. UN officials said they have documented reports of summary executions, abductions, torture, and sexual violence in the surrounding areas.
Members of the UN Human Rights Council have condemned the reported abuses and launched an urgent investigation into allegations of further violations.
International Community Urged to Act
Human rights experts warned that the events in al-Fashir demonstrate the dangers of allowing similar patterns of violence to continue unchecked. They highlighted the use of sieges, attacks on civilian infrastructure, restrictions on humanitarian access, and widespread abuses as warning signs of potential mass atrocities.
The UN has called on the international community to take urgent action to prevent further civilian suffering and avert another humanitarian catastrophe as Sudan’s conflict enters another dangerous phase.
