The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has warned newly appointed judges of the lower courts against accepting unsolicited gifts, saying such actions could expose them to petitions and erode public confidence in the judiciary.
The warning was delivered on Tuesday during the opening of an induction course for newly appointed judges. The CJN was represented at the event by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo.
Addressing the judges, Justice Kekere-Ekun stressed the importance of integrity and urged them to avoid situations that could compromise their independence or create perceptions of bias.
“Most importantly, do not allow unsolicited gifts. You must equally avoid throwing unnecessary birthday parties. People will seize the opportunity to bring unsolicited gifts that can lead to petitions,” she said.
The Chief Justice also advised the judges to uphold the highest ethical standards and ensure the speedy and fair determination of cases brought before them.
In his remarks, Justice Adejumo congratulated the newly appointed judges, describing their appointments as a significant responsibility that comes with the duty of upholding the rule of law and guaranteeing access to justice for all citizens.
He explained that the induction programme was designed to equip the judges with the knowledge and skills required to effectively discharge their duties.
According to him, the training will strengthen their understanding of judicial ethics, courtroom management and the practical application of substantive and procedural laws as they begin their careers on the bench.
The National Judicial Institute regularly organises induction programmes for newly appointed judicial officers as part of efforts to promote professionalism, integrity and efficiency within Nigeria's judiciary.
