The Nigerian Army has rescued a kidnapped senior officer, Lt. Col. Ofor Amobi, and a civilian, Ikechukwu Onwuanra, after a 10-day search operation carried out by security forces in Enugu State.
According to a military operational report released on Saturday in Abuja, the victims regained their freedom in the early hours of Friday after troops increased pressure on the kidnappers during a coordinated rescue mission.
The operation was carried out by troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, made up of personnel from the 82 Division Garrison, the reinforced 103 Battalion, the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service and the 197 Special Forces Battalion.
The report stated that the troops, under the leadership of the Commander of the 82 Division Garrison, searched forests and nearby communities in Inyi, Awlaw and Akpugo-Eze within Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State as part of efforts to locate the victims.
The breakthrough came around 2:00 a.m. on Friday after the Divisional Police Officer in Inyi Division provided intelligence on the victims' location. Troops quickly moved to the area and found both men abandoned at the edge of a forest in Inyi.
The military disclosed that the officer and the civilian had suffered gunshot injuries before they were rescued. They were immediately taken to the 82 Division Medical Hospital for treatment and further medical examination.
Initial findings showed that the victims had been blindfolded, taken to an unknown location by their captors and later left inside a forest along the Enugu-Anambra border.
The rescued victims told security personnel that the constant operations and pressure mounted by the joint troops forced the kidnappers to abandon them and flee the area.
The military said more information about the rescue operation would be released as investigations continue.
