Daniel Umemezie Becomes Second Nigerian-American To Win US National Youth Poet Laureate Title.

Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026-2027 US National Youth Poet Laureate, earning recognition from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

Umemezie becomes the 10th young poet to hold the prestigious title and the second Nigerian-American to receive the honour.

He follows in the footsteps of Salome Agbaroji, who made history in 2023 as the first Nigerian-American to be named US National Youth Poet Laureate.

A gifted writer, Umemezie uses poetry to explore themes of heritage, identity and the complexities of the Nigerian-American experience.

His appointment marks another significant achievement for Nigerian-American representation in the US literary community, coming three years after Agbaroji’s historic selection.

The U.S. Mission Nigeria celebrated Umemezie’s achievement across its social media platforms, describing him as a gifted Nigerian-American voice whose poetry bridges heritage, identity and the Nigerian-American experience.

“Meet Daniel Umemezie, the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate — the 10th poet to hold this prestigious title, and the second Nigerian-American to do so, following 2023 laureate Salome Agbaroji!” the mission said.

The U.S. Mission also praised his ability to use poetry to capture the richness and complexity of life while highlighting the importance of young people in creative expression.

It described his achievement as an example of how talented young people can use creativity to thrive, lead and inspire others.

Umemezie’s selection further highlights the growing contribution of Nigerian-American voices to the US literary and cultural landscape.
