Former Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Found Dead A Week After Resignation.

 

Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been found dead at an address in Battersea, south London, just days after resigning from the university amid controversy surrounding allegations of plagiarism.

The 41-year-old academic was found unresponsive on Friday, August 14, and was pronounced dead at the scene after officers were called by the London Ambulance Service.

The Metropolitan Police said Arday’s death was being treated as unexpected but was not believed to be suspicious. His next of kin have been informed.

Arday had resigned from his position as Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge the previous week following scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding some of his academic achievements. He had denied plagiarism but acknowledged errors in his work.

Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed sadness over his death, saying the university’s thoughts were with Arday’s family and friends.

The controversy surrounding Arday began after academic Nathan Cofnas, who was dismissed from his Cambridge role in 2024, alleged that he had identified multiple instances of plagiarism in Arday’s work and raised questions about some of his claimed achievements.

Arday’s appointment in 2023 as Cambridge’s youngest-ever Black professor had initially been celebrated as a significant milestone.

However, announcing his resignation, Arday said the intense scrutiny and public criticism had taken a significant personal toll.

He maintained that his resignation should not be interpreted as an admission that the allegations against him were true.

Cambridge had previously stated that allegations concerning plagiarism in Arday’s doctoral thesis and some journal publications had been examined by Liverpool John Moores University and the relevant journals.

Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his PhD in 2015, concluded that he had not committed plagiarism.

Cambridge had also announced an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his appointment, with Professor Prentice pledging that the inquiry would be thorough and transparent.

Arday’s death comes as the controversy surrounding his academic career remained under investigation.
