Last Monday, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, the 36th Commissioner of Police in Anambra State assumed duty. He first announced his assumption with a widely publicized press briefing in the conference room of the state police command headquarters in Amawbia.
Since after then, Ama who brings to the table
extensive professional experience, strategic policing knowledge and a clear
commitment to intelligence-led policing, has been at work, meeting
stakeholders, building partnerships and familiarizing himself with the state
and its stakeholders.
But while he is on it, some ethnic bigots who are a
total deviation from what Anambra and her beautiful people stand for have gone
on social media with a new narrative, with the intention to profile him and
label him unfit for the position. They profiled his Ebonyi origin, insinuating
that: "Now that an Ebonyi man is the new commissioner of Police, and
crimes in Anambra are mostly committed by Ebonyi people, he will always release
them."
First is that it is unfair to say that all, or most of
the crimes committed in Anambra are by Ebonyi people. Secondly, it is untrue to
believe that even if the first were to be true that a professional police
officer like Ama with a tested record of policing will compromise his position
because of criminals who hail from his state.
Those who are peddling this narrative only saw his
state of origin in his very robust profile, but failed to see his past records,
proven competence and dedication to professionalism.
Since they are too blind to such details, let me
present it here.
For the benefit of doubt, CP Ama is a highly
experienced and accomplished senior police officer with over three decades of
distinguished service in the Nigeria Police Force. Prior to his deployment to
Anambra State, he served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and training,
at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, an office he
previously served in as a Deputy Commissioner too.
He has been Deputy Commissioner of Police, General
Investigation, FCID Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force,
Force Headquarters Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant
Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding
Officer, No. 11 PMF, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse
Alhaji in the FCT; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu;
Commanding Officer, No. 26 PMF, Uyo;Divisional Crime Officer, Sango Otta, Ogun
State, and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among
other strategic posts.
This is the man who some failures are trying to
discredit because he hails from Ebonyi State.
Such an unfair remark can give a first time visitor in
Anambra the impression that the people are intolerant of others, but of course
CP Ama is not a stranger in Anambra as he has worked here before and
experienced the cooperation and hospitality of the Anambra man.
I want to assure CP Nnanna Oji Ama that those voices
represent a very minute and infinitesimal number of who Anambra people are. I'm
from Ebonyi and have lived and worked in Anambra for close to 20 years and can
attest to the fact that a larger number of Anambra people are thoroughly
accommodating, tolerant, very warm and receptive to strangers, and I bet that
CP Ama will thoroughly enjoy the friendship and cooperation of the people.
For those peddling such lies, it is a shame that they
couldn't as little verify his capabilities, but choose to dwell on his origin.
Ama is the 36th Commissioner of Police in Anambra
State. In all these numbers, we have had northerners, westerners and officers
from the South South on the seat, but never an Igbo man. At a time when state
police is on the table for serious consideration, having a Police Chief from
Igboland in Anambra should look ideal, and more like bringing the trophy closer
home, but not naysayers. They will rather stir disaffection and try to cause
trouble among siblings. Thankfully, they failed this time because CP Ama has
settled in and quickly commenced duty to the admiration of many, and also
receiving the cooperation of the very people they sought to put him against.
