The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a woman, identified as Sadiat Yunusa, over the alleged killing of her co-wife's three-year-old daughter in Kaiama, Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Ilorin on Friday, July 31, 2026, highlighting recent operational successes recorded by the command.
According to the police commissioner, the tragic incident was reported at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters on July 25, 2026. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, three-year-old Ummaiyat, had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to Kaiama Central Market.
Police allege that during that period, the suspect lured the child to a nearby farm settlement, where she allegedly strangled her to death.
Ojo said swift investigative efforts led to the arrest of the suspect, who reportedly confessed during interrogation.
According to the commissioner, the suspect told investigators that her actions were driven by resentment and jealousy stemming from a long-standing domestic dispute. She allegedly claimed that her husband had neglected her and their three children in favor of his second wife.
The police said investigations into the case are ongoing, while the suspect is expected to face prosecution in accordance with the law.
