Akpabio Reveals New State To Be Created In Nigeria.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared his support for the creation of Ibadan State, describing it as the only proposed state in Nigeria enjoying widespread popular backing.

Akpabio made the statement during a courtesy visit to the private residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

The visit came months after Oba Ladoja publicly appealed to President Bola Tinubu to approve the creation of Ibadan State during his installation as the 44th Olubadan.

Ladoja ascended the throne following the death of the 43rd Olubadan in July 2025 at the age of 90.

While receiving his Staff of Office from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the monarch had urged the president to ensure the creation of Ibadan State before 2027.

Speaking during the visit, Akpabio, who was accompanied by senators including Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi and Sharafadeen Ali, assured that the matter would be considered by the Senate.

He described Oba Ladoja as “a blessing to Ibadanland and the entire South-West,” noting that his background as a former governor and senator would positively impact his reign.

In response, Oba Ladoja reiterated the call for a separate state, saying, “My people want Ibadan State, and I urge you to use your office to ensure its actualisation.”

The monarch also appealed for constitutional recognition of traditional institutions, stressing that such protection would prevent governors from arbitrarily removing traditional rulers.
