Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has announced January 30, 2026, as the burial date for the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The governor disclosed this on Tuesday during a State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa, where he also outlined a four-day funeral programme in honour of the late deputy governor.
According to Diri, the announcement followed consultations between the state government, the family of the deceased and his church.
“Today, we want to use this opportunity to announce the funeral dates of our departed deputy governor,” the governor said.
He recalled that during the previous Executive Council meeting, a funeral committee was constituted and chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Nimbofa Ayawe.
“The committee representing the government has since met with the family and his church, and we are all in agreement on the burial programme,” Diri added.
He explained that funeral activities would commence on January 27 with sporting events, noting that the late deputy governor supervised the Ministry of Sports during his lifetime.
On January 28, a Day of Tributes will be held in his honour, while January 29 will feature special valedictory sessions, first at the Bayelsa State High Court and later at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House.
Governor Diri further stated that the final day of the programme, January 30, will feature a requiem mass at St Paul’s Catholic Church in Ofoni community, followed by the interment.
“This is the programme drawn up by the committee and approved by me,” the governor said.
