Lagos Pensioners Threaten Protest Over Unpaid Arrears.

Pensioners in Lagos State are warning of a possible mass protest if their unpaid arrears and approved pension increases are not settled by the end of March 2026.

The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS) in Lagos, Comrade Michael Omisande, addressed members during the union’s Open Congress Day, urging retirees to prepare for collective action if the situation remains unresolved.

He explained that many retirees have faced long periods of financial hardship due to delayed pension payments.

Among those affected are 60 former staff of the Lagos State University of Education, Ijanikin, who retired between 2023 and 2026 but have yet to receive their entitlements. Thirty of these retirees have passed away, leaving their families struggling financially.

Omisande recalled a meeting on May 27, 2025, when the state governor met with pension union leaders at the Alausa Secretariat and promised to act once the Federal Government’s pension implementation template was available.

The template arrived on January 12, 2026, and was sent to the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) to assess the financial implications. As of February 27, 2026, no action had been taken.

He warned that unless LASPEC completes the cost assessment and begins paying the accrued pension increases and arrears by the end of March, pensioners will have no choice but to stage protests to demand their rights.

The retirees’ warning comes amid growing frustration over delays that continue to leave families in difficult financial situations.
