Former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini, has raised alarm over what he describes as dangerous implications of recently proposed electoral changes, warning that presiding officers could face serious threats at polling units if the amended electoral act is allowed to fly with the president.
Mr., Igini also voiced his frustrations as a Nigerian of the level of hypocrisy by the those who work for elections in the country, stating that he regrets wasting his time in the service of the country.
According to him when granting an interview on Arise
News, said “I spent over 30 years of my life, including 10 practical years in
INEC, working to remove the history of our elections from the realm of
frustration and pain, so we can give meaning and purpose to the ballot as the
best means of expressing the will of the people in a democracy. However, I
would have been a dead man pursuing this cause; my colleague in Kano was killed
because we wanted to do the right thing for Nigeria”.
Resistance to credible elections in our country has
been longstanding.
