United States President Donald Trump sparked widespread reactions after making a joke about having a "threesome" with his two eldest sons during the opening ceremony of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota.
The comment was made on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, while Trump spoke in Medora about the Medal of Honor and the rare cases where both a father and son received the United States' highest military award.
During his speech, Trump joked that he should award the honour to himself and his two sons before quickly changing his statement after the audience reacted.
He later said he would instead choose only one of his sons and added that he was joking.
Trump also made light of giving the award to himself for his handling of issues linked to the investigation into Russia and to one of his sons for hunting, despite the fact that neither he nor his sons has served in the U.S. military.
Earlier the same day, Trump had also joked about presenting himself with the Medal of Honor while handing over Theodore Roosevelt's medal from the White House collection to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum during the library's ribbon-cutting ceremony.
He later explained that he abandoned the idea after his two eldest sons could not point to any action that would qualify him for the award. The Medal of Honor is reserved for members of the military who display extraordinary courage while risking their lives in combat.
The library event later turned into a political address as Trump praised his administration, criticised previous governments and attacked former President Joe Biden. He claimed the United States had become stronger and more respected under his leadership.
Trump also praised former President Theodore Roosevelt, saying the late leader helped build a powerful nation through strong leadership.
He argued that Roosevelt would not have approved of some recent Democratic administrations and repeated his criticism of past border policies while claiming his government had greatly improved border security.
