The Federal Government has temporarily opened Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, covering 47 kilometres from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction to the Eleko village junction.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed the development on Friday, stating that the temporary opening was carried out in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
According to Umahi, the decision aims to ease movement and improve traffic flow across Lagos during the festive period.
He said the partial opening represents the fulfilment of an earlier assurance given by the government. During his inspection of the project on 23 November 2025, the former Ebonyi State governor had pledged that Section 1 would be completed and opened between 12 and 17 December 2025.
The development is expected to greatly improve the challenging driving conditions along the Lekki–Ajah corridor, reducing travel time by more than half and lowering transport expenses.
Umahi further stated that April 2026 remains the target for completing Section 1 and half of Section 2 for full commissioning, excluding the bridges, which are part of the Section 2 contract.
