The Office of the former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, SAN, has clarified that the ‘revocation’ of Malami’s bail was entirely due to his presence at a political event in Kebbi State, and not because he breached any of his bail conditions.
In a statement released on Thursday, Mohammed Doka, the Special Assistant on Media Affairs to the former AGF, dismissed as false the reports claiming Malami failed to comply with his bail terms, describing such allegations as misleading and not supported by facts.
The statement explained that Malami had adhered to all the bail conditions previously issued by the EFCC in relation to accusations of money laundering and abuse of office, accusations he has repeatedly rejected.
It added that the anti-graft agency later imposed new limitations, which included a restriction on granting interviews to the media and a ban on engaging in political activities within Kebbi State.
“Abubakar Malami, SAN did not violate or fail to meet any bail condition. It was the EFCC that revoked his bail after he attended a political gathering in Kebbi State, not because of any breach of the law or his bail terms,” the statement said.
The statement further described the political restriction placed on Malami as unconstitutional, saying that preventing him from taking part in political activities in his home state was an infringement on his rights to freedom of movement, association, and political participation.
