Anambra Government Seals Shops Over Monday Closure.

The Anambra State Government has closed several shops in markets around Onitsha and nearby towns after traders failed to open on Monday.

Most of the affected shops were at the Building Materials Market in Ogidi, where many traders kept their businesses locked.

Officials, however, praised traders who opened their shops, especially at the Electrical Parts Dealers Market in Obosi.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Markets, Evarist Uba, visited the markets to check how well traders followed the state’s instruction to operate on Mondays.

During the visit, Uba noted that many shops at the Obosi market were open, signaling a break from the usual weekly closures that have affected business across the state.

The government described the openness of Obosi’s electrical parts market as encouraging, pointing out that it is an important center for electrical goods in the Southeast.

In contrast, shops in Ogidi that remained closed were sealed and will stay shut for two weeks.

Officials urged traders to comply with government directives to help boost the local economy.

Market leaders, including the Chairman of the Electrical Parts Dealers Association in Obosi, Chike Onunkwo, and Chief Jude Nwankwo, President of the International Building Materials Market in Ogidi, supported the government’s approach.

They said improved security and government efforts require traders to cooperate in rebuilding the economy.

A monitoring team, which included the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the Special Adviser on Security, AVM Ben Chiobi (rtd), and the Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, also checked other major markets in Nnewi and Onitsha to ensure compliance.
