Gunmen suspected to be bandits have demanded N100 million for the release of Mrs. Funke Ogunrinde, the wife of a forest guard who was recently killed in Oba-Isin, Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The attack happened on Wednesday evening when the armed men stormed the community at about 7:00 p.m.
They reportedly traced the forest guard, Mr. Raheem Ogunrinde, also known as Baba Kafaya, to his home.
He was said to be sitting outside with his brother, who works with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, when the attackers arrived and opened fire.
He was shot dead at the scene before the gunmen escaped into the nearby bush as security officers moved in after hearing the gunshots.
The killing caused fear across the town, with many residents running to nearby communities for safety.
Security personnel later took control of the area to prevent further violence and reassure the people.
By Thursday morning, the kidnappers reportedly contacted the family of the deceased and demanded N100 million to free Mrs. Ogunrinde.
A family member confirmed that the abductors warned that she would only be released alive if the money was paid.
The family has appealed for a reduction in the ransom, but there has been no agreement.
At the same time, they are grieving the loss of the forest guard and preparing for his burial.
