Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has appointed Pastor (Hon) Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of the state.
Akpe, who is currently serving as Chief of Staff at the Government House, was nominated by the governor and cleared by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
His approval brings an end to months of uncertainty over who would take over the position after the death of the former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Ewhrudjakpo, a senator before becoming deputy governor, died on December 11, 2025.
His passing created a vacancy that led to wide discussions across the state’s political space about who would be chosen as his replacement.
Before his new role, Akpe played key roles in the state government. He once served as Majority Leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and later became Chief of Staff to the governor.
He is from Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area, the same local government area as the late Ewhrudjakpo.
With the Assembly’s approval, Akpe is set to be sworn in as Deputy Governor, taking on the responsibility of supporting Governor Diri in running the affairs of the oil-rich state.
More details are expected as the swearing-in process is concluded.
