Boko Haram Burns Food Trucks On Maiduguri Road.

Suspected members of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province stopped a line of trucks carrying food to Maiduguri in Borno State and set some of them on fire on Saturday.

The vehicles, two trailers and three dump trucks loaded with beans, were intercepted along the road that runs between Monnguno and Guzamala, near Burmari and Garin Kashim villages, before the fighters fled into nearby bushes.

Drivers said the assailants let the air out of the tyres on each truck before starting fires at the front of the vehicles.

Local people rushed to help put out the flames before the fire could reach the back of the trucks, which allowed the drivers to get away safely.

One driver said he left his truck and ran into the bush when the attack began.

This section of road has seen other attacks in recent days.

Those using the route said they had seen trucks carrying maize and building supplies targeted by the same group about five days earlier.

Truck operators on the Maiduguri route said they are worried because there are no regular patrols by soldiers or other security forces on that road.

They told reporters that, unlike in some other dangerous areas of the state, there are few soldiers placed to protect travellers and commercial vehicles there.

Because of repeated attacks along the way, many owners of large trucks have stopped sending their vehicles down that stretch of road.
