Activities at the Edo State House of Assembly were brought to a sudden stop on Tuesday after a bullet and marks believed to be gunshot holes were discovered inside the Assembly complex.
Lawmakers had gathered for their first plenary sitting of 2026 when the discovery was made, causing fear and uncertainty within the premises.
The situation quickly created tension as members were alerted to what appeared to be signs of a shooting around the chamber area.
Following the development, the leadership of the House immediately suspended the sitting and invited security agencies to take charge of the situation.
Officers from the Edo State Police Command and the Department of State Services were called in to examine the complex and determine what happened.
The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Jonathan Ebamewu, later told journalists that the matter had been fully handed over to security agencies.
He explained that the decision to halt proceedings was taken to allow proper investigation before lawmakers could return to legislative duties.
He stated that the Assembly was prepared to begin work for the year but had to place safety first after noticing the incident within the complex.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police and the DSS were contacted immediately, and they had begun detailed checks to understand how the bullet and suspected holes appeared.
Ebamewu added that calm had since returned to the area and assured that members were ready to resume sitting once security agencies completed their work and submitted their findings.
As of the time this report was filed, armed police officers were seen moving around the Assembly complex, carrying out a thorough search as investigations continued.
