EFCC Grills El-Rufai On Corruption Allegations.

Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, appeared at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja on Monday for questioning over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.

El-Rufai, a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), complied with an invitation from the commission after his legal team confirmed he would make himself available.

His appearance follows a failed attempt to detain him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja the previous Thursday. He arrived at the EFCC office accompanied by hundreds of supporters.

A source at the EFCC confirmed that investigators were questioning El-Rufai about corruption allegations linked to his time as governor but could not provide a timeline for how long the interrogation would last.

Another source indicated that the matter could lead to a court arraignment.

El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Akpan, stated that the invitation to the commission was received while the former governor was abroad.

He added that the earlier attempt to arrest El-Rufai had no legal justification and violated constitutional protections of personal freedom.

Two groups of protesters gathered outside the EFCC headquarters. Some expressed support for El-Rufai, while others demanded a full investigation into the corruption claims.

A brief incident occurred when some of El-Rufai’s supporters were stopped from entering the commission’s office in Jabi, Abuja.

Muhammad Abdullahi, a spokesperson for the group calling for prosecution, stressed that the case should remain a legal matter and not be turned into political spectacle.

He insisted that the investigation into El-Rufai must be taken seriously.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale urged calm among the protesters and assured them that their petitions would be forwarded to the commission’s leadership.

He reaffirmed that the EFCC would handle the case professionally and address all concerns raised in the letters submitted.
