The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has denied that Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, suffered nosebleeding while in its custody.
The claim was made by Muyiwa Adekeye, a media aide to El-Rufai, but the ICPC called it false.
El-Rufai has been held by the ICPC since February 18, following his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission where he spent two nights.
Adekeye said El-Rufai’s lawyers had not seen any remand order authorizing detention beyond 48 hours without charge.
He also claimed that El-Rufai’s family and legal team faced difficulties accessing him, and that one of his wives was prevented from handing him a meal directly on February 17.
Adekeye added that El-Rufai allegedly experienced nosebleeding overnight.
The ICPC rejected these claims, with its spokesperson, Okor Odey, telling reporters that the allegation of nosebleeding was not true.
El-Rufai is currently under investigation by both the ICPC and EFCC over alleged financial misconduct during his governorship from 2015 to 2023.
In 2024, the Kaduna State House of Assembly accused him of diverting N432 billion in public funds and money laundering, recommending that he face prosecution.
Additionally, the State Security Service is set to arraign El-Rufai this week over a national TV claim that he monitored the national security adviser’s conversations by tapping his phone.
