FG Takes Over Popular University From State Government.

The federal government has formally taken over the ownership and management of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education in Ijagun, Ogun State, previously run by the state government.

The handover took place, during the university’s 17th convocation ceremony, where Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, signed a memorandum of understanding to complete the transfer.

Ahmad welcomed the development, describing it as an important stage in the growth of the institution and part of the federal government’s effort to strengthen education as a base for national growth and stability.

She said the change from a state university to a federal one showed years of dedication to the school’s goals and progress.

She noted that the university holds a key position in Nigeria’s education system as the country’s first university of education.

According to her, the federal government’s decision to take over the institution in March 2025 was carefully made and driven by national interest, with a focus on improving teacher training and long-term educational development.

The minister also praised the Ogun State Government for managing the institution responsibly over the years, adding that the signed agreement officially brought the university into the federal system.

She said the process was supported by concerned Nigerians, including Governor Abiodun.

In his remarks, Abiodun said the takeover improved fairness in the distribution of federal institutions, noting that Ogun East Senatorial District now has a federal university.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the move, saying it showed the administration’s belief that national growth depends on strong human capital development.

Earlier, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Adekunle Adeogun, drew attention to the challenge of student accommodation.

He called on stakeholders to help provide safe housing for students and also asked for more lecture halls to match the university’s new status and rising needs.
