The Federal Government has taken former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged illegal interception of phone communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Court records show that El-Rufai, 65, appeared on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on February 13, 2026, where he reportedly admitted knowledge of the interception and acknowledged knowing those involved, without reporting the matter to security agencies.
The charges, filed under reference number TABU DET CR/99/2026, include three counts. The first count alleges that El-Rufai admitted participation in the unlawful interception of the NSA’s phone communications, which is contrary to Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
The second count claims he knew the individuals responsible for the interception but failed to report them, breaching Section 27(b) of the same Act.
The third count alleged that El-Rufai used technical systems in a way that compromised public safety and national security, causing concern among Nigerians, contrary to Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
The case has been filed by a team of Federal Government lawyers, including ME Ernest, OM Owan, UM Bulla, CS Eze, and VE G. Orubor. Authorities said the Abuja Judicial Division of the Federal High Court has jurisdiction over the matter, and El-Rufai is expected to respond to the charges in court.
