Social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, became unreachable in Gabon on Wednesday after authorities ordered their suspension across the country.
The action followed an announcement on Tuesday by Gabon’s media regulator that social media services would be halted until further notice.
The regulator said the decision was taken due to concerns that online posts were causing tension and division among citizens.
The country’s communication authority directed an immediate stop to social media operations nationwide.
According to the spokesperson of the regulatory body, the move was necessary because of the type of content circulating online.
The authority said some posts were defamatory, hateful, insulting, and harmful to public morals.
It added that such materials were affecting social unity, the reputation of individuals, and the stability of state institutions.
The regulator also raised concerns about the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and the sharing of private data without permission.
It warned that these actions could trigger unrest, weaken national unity, and disrupt democratic progress in the country.
Although the statement did not list specific platforms to be blocked, Facebook and TikTok were confirmed to be inaccessible by Wednesday.
Users in Gabon reported being unable to access the platforms just hours after the announcement.
Despite the suspension, the regulator stated that freedom of expression remains a right protected under Gabonese law.
Authorities maintained that the decision was aimed at protecting public order and national security.
The development comes less than a year after President Brice Oligui Nguema took office. His administration is currently facing growing public dissatisfaction.
Teachers began a strike in December over salary and working conditions, and similar protests have spread to workers in the health sector, higher education, and state broadcasting services.
The ongoing labour actions have increased tension in the country, creating a challenging period for the government as it works to address demands from public sector employees.
