Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama, has ordered the immediate recall of the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Ahmed, following allegations of irregularities during a recent party primary.
The concerns arose after Mr. Ahmed participated in the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso East Constituency while holding a public office.
The presidency said the decision was necessary to avoid any perception of misconduct and to uphold the government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.
As a result, Mr. Ahmed can no longer serve as Ghana’s representative in Nigeria.
Reports indicated that the primary elections saw claims of vote-buying involving more than one candidate.
These allegations created unease both within the party and the government, prompting swift action.
The president noted that while the NDC has launched its own investigation into the primary, it was important to act immediately regarding public service standards.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs has been directed to take all administrative and diplomatic measures needed to enforce the recall.
Officials clarified that this move is aimed at maintaining the integrity of public service and does not interfere with the party’s ongoing investigation.
