A 12-year-old schoolgirl has been abducted in the Challenge area of Ibadan, Oyo State, in what police described as a suspected kidnapping case.
The incident happened on Thursday morning as the girl was being dropped off at school. She is a Junior Secondary School 2 pupil of Monarch Model College.
Reports say the attackers struck around 7:20 a.m. near a junction leading to the school.
Witnesses said the girl’s mother was driving her to school when a group of masked men in an unmarked vehicle followed them.
At a junction close to the school, the armed men blocked their path.
They fired shots into the air, causing panic in the area, and damaged one of the tyres of the woman’s Toyota RAV4 with Lagos registration number KRD 350 GP.
Despite efforts by the mother to stop them, the men forcefully took the girl and escaped through the Challenge axis.
Residents in the area were thrown into fear as the attackers fled.
The case was quickly reported at the Orita Challenge Police Station.
Officers visited the scene with the girl’s mother to assess what happened and begin preliminary inquiries.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the abduction and said detectives have been deployed to track down those responsible.
Officers have also spoken with eyewitnesses to gather useful information that could help in the search.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Femi Haruna, has directed a full investigation into the matter.
The police said efforts are ongoing to rescue the child safely and arrest the suspects.
The girl’s parents are cooperating with security agencies as investigations continue.
The command appealed to members of the public to stay calm and share any information that could assist the police.
Authorities assured residents that any tip received will be handled discreetly. Further updates are expected as the operation progresses.
