Suspected armed men entered a Celestial Church of Christ in Uso, part of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State during the early hours of Wednesday, February 25, 2026, and took six people who were attending a service.
The attack happened just before 1 a.m. along the Uso‑Owo Expressway, a route that has seen security problems recently.
People who witnessed the event said the gunmen forced their way into the church grounds and dragged the worshippers away to a place that has not yet been found. One member taken by the group managed to escape soon after the kidnapping.
Relatives of those taken have said they are still waiting to hear from the captors.
Police in Ondo State confirmed that they were informed of the incident shortly after it happened, saying the attack occurred around 12:50 a.m.
When the report reached them, officers from the state command moved quickly with support from the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups to begin work to find the missing worshippers.
Through those efforts, one of the kidnapped church members has been brought back safely. The authorities also detained a person believed to have helped the attackers, and that individual is assisting police with their enquiries.
Security teams are still searching for the other people taken and for anyone else involved in the attack.
Police have asked residents of the area to stay calm, watch for anything unusual, and give information that could support the ongoing search.
