Students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, were thrown into chaos on Sunday night when unknown attackers, believed to be herdsmen, assaulted some first-year students.
Several students suffered injuries, though the exact number is not confirmed.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9 p.m. as the students were walking to a night class along Ifite Road, a remote part of the campus.
One male student was seriously hurt while trying to protect himself and lost some fingers.
He was quickly taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Amaku for treatment.
His twin sister was also wounded during the attack.
A source familiar with the incident said the students were unaware of the danger of the isolated path they chose to walk, making them vulnerable to the attack.
The student who was severely injured was saved after his sister’s alarm drew the attention of passersby who rushed him to the hospital before the university security team arrived.
University officials visited the victims at the hospital on Monday morning.
The team included the Dean of Student Affairs, the Chief Security Officer, the Director of JUPEB, the Sub-Dean of Student Affairs, and a representative from the Public Relations office.
The acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Louis Njelita, confirmed the attack and said that the Chief Security Officer had been informed and was taking steps in response.
