The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested 17 people in Kano State during a special operation launched ahead of Ramadan.
The Kano Strategic Command of the agency said the arrests were made under an enforcement exercise tagged Operation Ramadan Mubarak.
The State Commander, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, made this known in a statement released in Kano by the command’s spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari.
He explained that the operation was designed to ensure that residents observe the holy month in a peaceful and safe environment free from drug activities.
According to the command, officers carried out intelligence-led raids in different parts of Kano, targeting areas known for drug dealings.
The affected locations included Race Course, Dan’agundi, Filin Mahaha, Kano Zoological Garden, Farm Centre along Zaria Road, and Tashar Rami in Na’ibawa.
During the coordinated raids, 17 suspects were taken into custody for alleged involvement in drug-related offences.
The agency also reported the recovery of different banned substances.
Items seized during the operation included methamphetamine, also known as Ice, cannabis sativa, Exol-5, diazepam, and rubber solution.
The command stated that the action forms part of ongoing efforts to break drug supply chains and reduce the sale and use of narcotics in Kano State.
It added that the operation follows the directive of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, retired Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba-Marwa, who has called for stronger enforcement activities across the country.
Yahaya-Lawal assured residents that similar operations would continue throughout Ramadan to keep communities safe.
He also called on members of the public to remain alert and provide useful information that can help the agency tackle illegal drug trade in the state.
