An operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Bonny Island, Rivers State, has led to the arrest of six suspected drug dealers and the recovery of various hard drugs, but one officer lost his life during the action.
The agency said the raid was carried out on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Ama Hausa, an area known for illegal drug activities.
During the operation, NDLEA officers recovered substances believed to be cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk, and tramadol from the suspects.
Trouble broke out when the suspects allegedly resisted arrest.
According to the NDLEA, the gang leader, Genesis George Benson, called in armed hoodlums who attacked the officers as they moved in to make arrests.
In the process, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid sustained serious head injuries.
Mujahid was rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital for urgent treatment but later died from the injuries he suffered during the attack.
Despite the violence, the NDLEA operatives were able to regain control of the situation and arrest all six suspects targeted in the raid.
Those arrested alongside Benson were identified as ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed, and Muhammed Yusuf.
The agency said all the suspects are now in custody and will be charged to court after investigations are completed.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), expressed sadness over the death of Mujahid.
He described the late officer as committed and brave, noting that he died while carrying out his duty to the country.
Marwa also praised the officers involved in the operation for standing firm in the face of the attack and ensuring that the suspects were arrested and the drugs recovered.
He added that the agency would continue its fight against drug trafficking across the country and warned that attacks on NDLEA personnel would not be tolerated.
