Nigerian Jailed In Ireland For Forcing Abortion.

A Nigerian man living in Ireland, Adeleke Adelani, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after forcing his former girlfriend to take multiple abortion pills, causing her pregnancy to end against her will.

The incident occurred on Valentine’s Day in 2020 at a house in County Donegal.

Court documents revealed that Adelani had told the woman he would harm her unborn child if she refused to take the pills.

He reportedly lured her to his home under the impression that they would raise the baby together, despite knowing she wanted to continue the pregnancy.

Evidence presented in court showed that he had researched how to carry out the abortion and deliberately pressured her into taking the pills.

The victim, who requested her attacker’s name be made public, described the trauma she suffered, saying that while she is learning to live with the loss, the pain of losing her child remains.

Her statement detailed the emotional and psychological impact of the incident, including the fear and violation she experienced.

Judge John Aylmer described Adelani’s actions as carefully planned and serious. He initially set an 11-year sentence for the unlawful termination of the pregnancy and five years for assault, to run at the same time.

Considering Adelani’s guilty plea, his behavior in prison, and some demonstration of remorse, the sentence was reduced to nine years for the abortion and four and a half years for assault.

These will be added to a separate five-and-a-half-year sentence Adelani is currently serving for another offence.

Adelani pleaded guilty to ending the life of a foetus under the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018 and to causing harm under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. Gardaí who responded to the case described it as a serious domestic incident.

Officials commended the victim for her courage in seeking justice and urged anyone experiencing coercion, violence, or harassment to report it to authorities.
